Forgiveness and answered prayer
When you pray, whether asking God for forgiveness, seeking help with a problem, or requesting a promotion at work, you must also be willing to forgive others who have wronged you. Jesus made this clear in Mark 11:25:
“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
Forgiveness is one of God’s prerequisites for answered prayer. It must come from a grateful, forgiving, and sincere heart. The same principle applies to helping others and giving. God never forces us to act; He desires a willing, joyful, and giving heart. Give because you want to, not because you feel obligated or pressured by a church or person to do so. Deuteronomy 15:10 teaches:
“Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.”
So, whether you are asking for forgiveness, helping others, or tithing, do it with a grateful heart. You may have many reasons or excuses to justify withholding forgiveness, perhaps believing that the person who hurt you doesn’t deserve it. But God calls us to a higher standard. 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
When you surrender your life to Christ, you become a new creation. That transformation should be evident in how you live and how you treat others, including those who have wronged you. Forgive them, regardless of what they have done.
Forgiveness may not always come easily. Some wounds are deep and painful, and healing can take time. If you find it hard to forgive, don’t be discouraged; bring it to God in prayer. Ask Him to work a miracle in your heart.
Here’s a simple prayer you can use when forgiveness feels impossible:
“God, this is difficult for me, and I am unable to do this on my own. I give it to You and ask that You change my heart and work a miracle in my life, for Your glory.”
It is my heartfelt prayer that you find the peace that only God can provide.
